Chol Marial should get some action on Tuesday night
For Maryland, it’s simple. Play your main six or seven guys and rely on raw talent to get you a win. So far this season it has worked, but it will only get you so far.
Tuesday’s tilt with Nebraska can be an opportunity to play some guys that may not get as much action in bigger games and boost their confidence.
During this six game winning streak, Mark Turgeon has gone with the same lineup each time. The switch of Aaron Wiggins to the sixth man and bringing Eric Ayala back into the starting role has been a blessing in disguise for Wiggins, as he’s scored in double figures in 4 of these past 6 games.
Wiggins isn’t someone who needs the time to get his reps up, as he practically plays starter minutes and usually is on the floor in the closing minutes of games. But there’s one guy in particular who needs some minutes against Nebraska if things are going smoothly, and that is Chol Marial.
The 7’2″ freshman from South Sudan has been held out of almost every game of this winning streak for the Terps, and is someone who could benefit from seeing some time on the floor.
Ever since the tear that Jalen Smith has gone on over the last few games, Turgeon has been reluctant to sit him for long stretches. Marial is the only other guy who could really have any impact playing the 5.
Marial has been out of basketball for almost two years due to injuries, and it has shown in his play so far. It’s going to take some time for him to get adjusted to the level of competition that he will be facing at this level, and the matchup with the Huskers could be a great opportunity for him to get some action and a better feel for what college basketball is really like.
Maryland has been successful as of late when they have limited the amount of guys that see the floor on a regular basis, and that should not change. But in case Jalen Smith is in foul trouble or needs a break, they need someone to turn to that they know can provide solid minutes on both ends.
Come March, the Terps could really use some versatility, specifically in the front court. Any chance to give a young, inexperienced player some action should be taken, and this could be the case for Marial on Tuesday.
