San Diego State Basketball: 2019-20 keys for Aztecs to sweep New Mexico
By John Vaccaro
San Diego State Basketball continues to push for a number 1 seed in the NCAA as the last undefeated team remaining in college basketball.
They’ve arguably been at the best we’ve seen them this season over the last couple of weeks. It started with them traveling to The Pit and demolishing New Mexico after losing in Albuquerque for the last 3 years. Then San Diego State Basketball came back from an 8 point halftime deficit at home against Utah State and absolutely dominated the second half to win by 12. Then they went on the road and systematically dismantled Air Force, beating them by 15.
Now they’re a win on Tuesday night from already clinching at least a share of the Mountain West regular-season title. They’ve even gotten to the point that over the weekend they were rewarded with a #1 seed in the early bracket reveal, which would be their best seeding in school history if they can finish this run. The next step to make that a reality is their first season sweep of New Mexico since the 2015-16 season.
New Mexico has had some brutal luck this season, but things finally started looking up over the weekend. On Saturday, they got JaQuan Lyle and Vance Jackson back after they were both injured in the middle of January and it obviously made a difference. They crushed Wyoming at home for their first win in over two weeks. The returns of those two suddenly make them a real threat in the conference that they weren’t the last time these two met.
This clash at Viejas Arena on Tuesday night rekindles one of the best college basketball rivalries west of the Mississippi with San Diego State’s undefeated season and New Mexico’s potential conference tournament seeding on the line. Here are the keys for the Aztecs to win this exciting Mountain West battle.
