LAS VEGAS, NV – MARCH 13: Wyoming Cowboys fan Ken ‘Cowboy Ken Barrel Man’ Koretos of Wyoming

San Diego State officially wrapped up the Mountain West Basket regular-season title last week. But who’s winning the battle for second place?

It comes as no surprise that San Diego State won the Mountain West Basketball conference title, but for them to officially claim that honor so early in the season is very impressive.

Elsewhere, we saw more reshuffling behind them as teams 2-5 continue to battle to figure who actually is the second-best team in the conference.

Let’s take a look at how everybody stacked up after another couple of exciting weeks of Mountain West basketball.

11. Wyoming (-)

it was yet another winless couple of weeks for Wyoming, but they once again had a couple of games where they looked like they could be much more than the worst team in the Mountain West Conference. The blowout loss at New Mexico obviously wasn’t exactly a highlight for the Cowboys, but their two home games both saw them put up a good fight against top teams in the conference.

They were tied with Boise State at the half and were beating Colorado State by eight at halftime. They ended up losing both games, but both performances added to a long line of games where they were surprisingly competitive, but just can’t seal the deal.

The Cowboys need to win two of their last four to avoid winning their least games ever in a Mountain West season, but their schedule doesn’t do them any favors. They only get one more home game this season and it’s against Nevada, which doesn’t really seem like a winnable game for Wyoming. Their other three games are trips to Utah State, Air Force, and Fresno State.

A win at Utah State would be absolutely shocking, so Wyoming will need to win the other two road games to avoid making the bad kind of history. Wins at Air Force and Fresno State certainly aren’t out of the question, but it would be surprising given the way Wyoming has struggled to win all year.
