The Maryland Terrapins and Ohio State Buckeyes are playing really well at the most pivotal time.
When these two teams met back in January, the Maryland Terrapins beat Ohio State 67-55 behind a 20 point performance from Anthony Cowan Jr. Darryl Morsell and Jalen Smith scored in double figures as well. The Terps outscored the Buckeyes in fast-break points (12-6) and bench points (12-5).
The Maryland Terrapins are winners of nine in a row. Those wins include Indiana, No.18 Iowa, No. 20 Illinois, Nebraska and Michigan State. The Terps beat Northwestern on Tuesday thanks to Jalen Smith’s 22 points and 19 rebounds. Cowan Jr., Morsell and Donta Scott scored in double figures as well. As a result, the Terps are now ranked seventh in the NET with a 7-4 record in quadrant one. Check out their NET team sheet.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have climbed their way back to .500 in Big Ten play before falling at Iowa earlier in the week. They have won four out of their last five games to do so and have a major test at home against the best team in the conference. The Buckeyes are ranked 21st in the NET and have a 4-8 record vs quadrant one opponents. They have played well at home against quadrant one opponents with a 3-1 record.
One thing that is clear about Ohio State is that they get the ball in the paint. The paint is their bread and butter. Kaleb Wesson has a lot to do with that. In the first meeting, he scored 15 points and brought down nine rebounds. He is also a big man that shoots efficiently from the perimeter at 43 percent. Smith, his counterpart, shoots at a team-leading 38 percent from the perimeter for the Terps.
A quad one win for the Buckeyes would be huge against the Terps. A loss here wouldn’t hurt Maryland too much but they need to keep winning to pull away and secure a Big Ten regular-season title.
Prediction: Maryland 70 – Ohio State 67
