Feed off of the crowd’s energy

For the first time since its inaugural season, ESPN’s College Gameday will be held in College Park, Maryland this Saturday.

It will be the second time in two weeks that the show will cover the Michigan State and Maryland matchup, with Maryland winning the first one by a score of 67-60 in East Lansing on February 15th.

In that matchup it was Maryland who got off to a fast start, leading 39-24 late in the first half. The Terps went scoreless for the rest of the half, and Michigan State cut the lead to 39-31 going into the break.

After the mini-run from the Spartans prior to halftime, it was clear that the momentum had switched in their favor. The crowd got into it, disrupting Maryland in their half-court set and caused multiple shot clock violations and turnovers.

A Cassius Winston three-pointer with about 7:25 left on the clock gave the Spartans their first lead since it was 5-3, after being down as many as fifteen.

Michigan State was playing towards the crowd, feeding off of their noise and involvement, something that is important for a home game in the Big Ten.

Although Maryland was eventually able to quiet the crowd thanks to a trio of late three’s by Anthony Cowan Jr., it was clear that the crowd played a large role in helping the Spartans come back.

The Terps will need to figure out a way to not dig themselves in this much of a hole on Saturday, even though the theme of their season has been coming from behind to win.

Maryland is 15-0 in the Xfinity Center this season, and this time around the crowd will be in their favor. With the bright lights of College Gameday in town, expect them to feed off of a raucous and lively environment.
