Bracketology 2020: Creighton, Michigan State and Texas among biggest winners
With the regular season starting to wrap up, teams are making last impressions towards their Bracketology resumes. Which ones had the best past week?
For many of the smaller conferences, the 2019-20 regular season has ended, with the seeds for the upcoming conference tournaments all set. As for the programs from the power conferences, they only have 1-2 games left themselves before postseason play really begins. That means that there are only a couple more chances for those on the bubble to improve their own resume for Bracketology.
Here are the 10 biggest winners from this past week that made huge strides towards getting a better seed for the NCAA Tournament:
*All NET rankings are through Feb 29 games.
Clemson Tigers (15-13, 9-9 ACC)
The bubble just isn’t that strong this season, with the ACC as the biggest source of evidence of this. Teams such as NC State, Notre Dame and Syracuse keep losing, while North Carolina seems intent on popping everyone else’s bubble this season. That gives a glimmer of hope towards to team such as Clemson, who highlights are as good as everyone else’s.
The Tigers defeated top-10 Florida State on Saturday, giving them the home sweep over the top three teams in the ACC this season (Duke and Louisville also). Few teams can claim wins on their resume and with games left against Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, Clemson could have an 11-9 record heading in the conference tournament. With a NET ranking above 70, they’ll have a ton of work to do to be on the right side of the bubble. But considering that they were projected to finish around last place, this season has already been a success for Brad Brownell.
Creighton Bluejays (22-6, 11-4 Big East)
With Maryland and the top ACC teams all suffering losses this past week, an unlikely program has slid into the conversation for a potential No. 1 seed. Creighton has won five straight games heading into the matchup with St. John’s on Sunday, including wins over Seton Hall, Marquette and Butler.
With a 13-6 overall record against Quad 1 and 2 opponents, along with being only one of a few teams with no losses outside of Quad 1, the Bluejays may be the biggest beneficiary of a loss from either Gonzaga or San Diego State in the upcoming conference tournaments.
