NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 32 conference tournaments for 2019-20
By Connor Hope
32) Western Athletic Conference
March 12-14
Cal Baptist is ineligible to compete in the WAC Tournament, which means New Mexico State might be the heaviest favorite to win their conference tournament this season. Coming from a guy who is usually a WAC fan, this year is not the year to start watching. New Mexico State is not quite as good as they have been in the past and they are still the best bet to win the auto-bid. That is probably reason enough to skip everything outside of the Championship. And that game is likely only worth it to get acquainted with the Aggies.
31) Northeast Conference
March 4, 7, 10
While the Northeast Conference tournament should be rather competitive in the later rounds, it is ranked low out of spite. The fact that the conference regular-season champion cannot compete for the auto-bid, because of a ridiculous NCAA rule, is reason enough to turn a blind eye to this one. St. Francis, Robert Morris and Sacred Heart are all in position to win the auto-bid, but Merrimack is still the people’s champ. If Merrimack was eligible, this tournament would likely be 5-10 spots higher. So, take that as you will.
30) Southwestern Athletic Conference
March 10, 13-14
If the SWAC isn’t the worst conference in the country, they are close to it, and despite being one of the bottom 100 teams in the country, Prairie View A&M is pretty clearly the best team in the conference. Not only is the conference bad, but it isn’t likely to be competitive until the later rounds, which is a double whammy. There really isn’t a single game that would be suggested viewing, but a Texas Southern vs Prairie View A&M matchup may be the closest.
29) America East Conference
March 7, 10, 14
If New Mexico State isn’t the most overwhelming favorite for an auto-bid, than Vermont is likely the next in line. Behind Anthony Lamb, one of the best mid-major players in the country, the Catamounts have no clear challenger on their path to a third tournament bid in four years. The only reason that this conference isn’t in the bottom three is because of Lamb, and the possibility that a matchup with Stony Brook in the Championship could be interesting.
