San Diego State Basketball: Making or breaking potential March to 2020 Final Four
Taking care of the ball, and hitting from deep
It is an old adage, but if you do not turn over the ball, you are going to have more opportunities to score. The San Diego State Aztecs take that philosophy to the next level. With the MWC regular season completed, the Aztecs finished off conference play averaging just eleven turnovers per game.
It begins and ends with Junior point guard Malachi Flynn who turns over the ball less than twice a game, and he more than compensates for that stat with over five assists per game. As for the more chances to score, over 65% of their shots are of the two-point variety and they connect on 53% of them
More impressively is the open shots from beyond the arc that the Aztecs are getting. At over 38% the Aztecs are tied for11th in the college basketball, they do however discriminate on the shots they are willing to attempt. They attempt 24 threes per game, which places them sixth in their conference. The players making these threes are Jordan Schakel (44%) and Matt Mitchell. These two will have to continue to make their long-range jumpers if the Aztecs are going to make a long run in the tournament.
