San Diego St. Aztecs

29-2 | NET: 4 | KPI/SOR Avg: 9.5 | BPI/POM/SAG Avg: 7.3

Losing to Utah St. in the Mountain West tournament championship game finally put to bed all the talk (folly is a more appropriate word) about whether it would be prudent for San Diego St. to lose and avoid the trappings of being a West Coast team having to travel to Madison Square Garden as the East Region’s 1-seed to play any of a cast of East Coast-based top seeds.

Led by MWC player of the year Malachi Flynn, the Aztecs went on a remarkable run to being the country’s final remaining undefeated team before losing at home to UNLV in what is a Quad 3 loss.

SDSU is 11-1 across Quads 1 and 2, including a perfect 3-0 in Quad 1A with wins at BYU, at Utah St., and on a neutral floor against Creighton. SDSU also racked up an impressive neutral-court win over Iowa and went 16-1 in road and neutral court opportunities, something the NCAA Selection Committee will value highly.

While I believe its loss to Utah St. took away any chance SDSU has at a 1-seed, it is firmly and immovably on the 2-seed line where it will likely remain out West as the #2 to Gonzaga’s #1. Please, dear basketball gods, let us see that matchup in the Elite Eight!

Bracketology Prediction: 2-seed, West Region
