Maryland basketball won their first Big Ten title in program history and they were just getting started. Here is a review of a team that has arrived in the Big Ten conference.

Maryland Basketball had the makings of a national championship contender. If they were going to win it all, this was going to be the team to take them to the promised land. They won a share of the Big Ten title. Anthony Cowan Jr. finished his career as a winner and one of the best leaders the program has seen at the point guard spot. He deserves to have his jersey up in the rafters at Xfinity Center.

The Terps finished the 2019-20 season 24-7 (14-6 Big Ten) ranked 12th in the AP Poll behind co-conference champion Michigan State who ranked ninth. They were ranked as high as third in the AP Poll and as low as 17th. The Terps key wins came against Illinois (home and road), Indiana (road) No. 11 Ohio State (home), Rutgers (home), Nebraska (home), Michigan State (road), Minnesota (road) and Michigan at home to clinch their share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

The Terps had to maneuver through the loss of frontcourt depth, winning the Orlando Invitational, gaining momentum and confidence on a nine-game winning streak and going through a rough patch at the end of the season en route to program history. They showed a will to win when they were down by 10 or more points. To have several come from behind wins during the season spoke to how resilient the team was in the face of adversity.

They will have to rebuild to some degree because Anthony Cowan Jr. will be moving on but Jalen Smith’s future with the program is unclear. Maryland basketball gave their fans, excitement, frustration, joy and a good brand of basketball to watch.
