Aamir Simms declares for the NBA Draft
Clemson’s Aamir Simms is testing the NBA waters though he has left the possibility of returning to college open. Simms has until June 3 to make his decision whether he is staying or going.
“Aamir had an outstanding season and earned all-conference recognition,” Clemson coach Brad Brownell told the Post and Courier. “Our staff is fully supportive of him as he goes through this process.”
Clemson won five of its last eight games to finish the season at 16-15 overall. Simms was a major reason that the Tigers were able to post their seventh straight winning campaign. The 6-8 forward led the team in scoring on 11 occasions, rebounding 18 times and assists eight times. He produced five double-doubles and topped the squad in scoring (13), rebounds (7.2), and assists (2.6) becoming the first player in Clemson history to finish with the highest average in all three categories.
The Virginia native also hauled down a career-high 2.3 offensive rebounds, came up with one steal and got to the free-throw line the most of his career. Additionally, Simms improved his efficiency as he averaged 1.33 points per shot while shooting 47.4% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc.
While I believe Simms could develop into an NBA prospect it would behoove him to return to school for another year because he won’t be drafted this year and will likely be destined for the NBA G-League.
If Simms does return, he will likely play alongside incoming four-star recruit PJ Hall in the Tigers frontcourt. It would also mean that Clemson roster would also be set, barring any late departures, as the Tigers only lose Tevin Mack — who was with the team for one season — and role-player Curran Scott. Project Olivier Maxence Prosper is the only other member of Brownell’s recruiting 2020 recruiting class.
