There are some high-profile NCAA Basketball programs going after transfer guard Trey Murphy. Who will land the former Rice Owl?

There are a number of intriguing NCAA Basketball transfers currently in the portal. As far as the mid-majors go, there are some who are getting the attention of the power conference programs. That includes Trey Murphy, who’s flying under the radar nationally but not to the coaches.

The Rice Owls didn’t have the greatest season, finishing under .500 overall for the season. Murphy was a bright spot, leading the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) while adding 5.5 rpg. Although technically a guard who can operate from the perimeter. The 6’8 Murphy at times had to play and guard at the center position, thanks to the undersized lineups Rice had out there.

Still, he ended up taking 2/3 of his shots from three-point range, making 37% from deep this past season and 39% overall in the first two years. When you have a 6’8 guard who can shoot like Murphy can, and has two years left of eligibility, you’ll have a bunch of teams calling once you enter the portal.

That’s what happened with Murphy, with dozens of teams offering scholarships. In the end, a final four group remained for his services;

Having the past two national champions (Virginia and Villanova) on the list instantly catches attention but don’t discount the nearby Houston Cougars, or Pittsburgh’s head coach Jeff Capel in this process.

So who’ll land the transfer Murphy, who has to sit out next season barring an unexpected waiver from the NCAA? Here’s a closer look at his potential fit with each of the four programs.
