Arizona State Basketball was a borderline NCAA tournament team last season.  With only one real senior departing, the Devils got another huge addition.

The 2020 College Basketball off-season has been unquestionably one of the most active off-season. We saw another grad transfer change schools Sunday, former Portland State guard Holland Woods has committed to Arizona State Basketball. Woods being a grad student will be eligible immediately next season.

Holland Woods was one of the hottest names in the transfer portal. Woods capped off his 2019-2020 season as a first-team All-Big Sky Conference selection. The 6’1 point guard did a little bit of everything last year for Portland State. Woods averaged 17.7 points, 5.2 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game last season. A versatile guard who can create his own shot and be very capable to step out and knock down the three. Also Woods 5.2 assists a game was the 2nd most in the Big Sky Conference.

With Woods attending high school less than 30 minutes from the Arizona State campus, it’s not shocking he ultimately ended up a Sun Devil. Woods picked the Sun Devils over Oregon State, Gonzaga, New Mexico, and even considered returning back to Portland State.

After making it to the 2nd round last year as an 11 seed, Arizona State found themselves in nearly the same spot last year. Finishing 20-11 and 11-7 in conference slated them 3rd in the Pac12. Good news is the Sun Devils are not losing much. Arizona State is returning its top two leading scorers, Remy Martin and Alonzo Verge Jr. With some big departures from Arizona, Oregon, and UCLA the Devils should be a high trend for gamblers going into the 2020 season.

With what looks a like wide-open Pac 12 next year, will Woods help the Devils reach places they have not seen since the 90s? Yes the 90s, the last time Arizona State reached the Sweet 16. With the addition of Holland Woods and some strong returning players, Arizona should be a major player in the Pac 12 and in all of college basketball.
