CAA Basketball: Way-too-early power rankings for 2020-21 season
8) UNC Wilmington
In his two full seasons at UNC Wilmington, head coach C.B. McGrath struggled vitally with a 21-44 record. Half through his third wasn’t much better. On January 13th, 2020 UNC Wilmington announced the departure of coach McGrath after a 5-14 record.
Takayo Siddle takes over the helm for the Seahawks. Siddle spent time in Wilmington from 2014-2017 before becoming an assistant at NC State. Siddle inherits a young team with a lot of returning talent. Looking to distill what we learned under Kevin Keatts into a once-prosperous program.
The Seahawks return the top two scorers from last season Ty Gadsden and Jaylen Sims who combined for 22.4 points per game. Gadsden and Sims relied on themselves to get almost every bucket. Coach McGrath ran a deep bench isolation style of basketball. With coach Siddle taking over you would expect the Seahawks to spread the ball around more.
Look for Mike Okauru to have a big year. A 6’3 guard who can run the point, shoot the three, and dish the ball around. In a new system, you should only see his numbers rise. Paired with Gadsden, Sims, and a new offensive mind you should see a vast offensive improvement.
