NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing guard Jose Perez 10 transfer options
Memphis Tigers
Head coach Penny Hardaway has plenty of fans, along with NBA ties. That’s intriguing for Perez, who fits the kind of guard the Tigers want. And while the American Athletic Conference is still tougher than the Big South, it’s not as challenging as the Big 12 or the ACC.
Problem for Perez will be finding a role on the team and in the starting lineup. Leading point guard Alex Lomax (4.3 apg) is just a rising junior, while former Duke commit Boogie Ellis is set for a breakout sophomore campaign. And then there’s Landers Nolley, who’ll likely have to sit out after leaving Virginia Tech. The 6’7 guard/wing put u 15.5 ppg and recently decided to forego the NBA Draft. Unless someone leaves, it’s hard to see Perez having the same kind of role that he was used to at Gardner-Webb.
Minnesota Gophers
The team has already scored a pair of frontcourt transfers in Liam Robbins and Brandon Johnson. But if we assume that star guard Marcus Carr comes back but only for one more year, the Gophers will need to find more guards outside of top-100 freshman combo guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. and rising sophomore rotation player Tre’ Williams.
Coach Pitino isn’t on the safest grounds, particularly if the team has another season of below .500
overall, despite having multiple All-Conference players. But being able to have a clear huge role on a power conference team may be too much to pass up. And he and Robbins could form a lethal 1-2 punch in the Big Ten in 2021-22, once both are eligible.
