Big Ten Basketball: Breakout candidate from each team for 2020-21 season
Minnesota: Tre’ Williams
No favors were done for Richard Pitino’s Minnesota Basketball when leading scorer and rebounder Daniel Oturu declared for the 2020 NBA Draft, unlike 6’2 guard Marcus Carr who also declared, Oturu will not play a game in Williams Area. While Oturu’s absence is bad and Carr’s presence is good for the Golden Gophers, neither situation alters Tre’ Williams’ playing time.
A player who also will not be stepping on the Williams Arena’s court as a Golden Gopher is 29 minutes a game man Payton Willis. Willis has transferred to the College of Charleston and has left a hole in the starting line-up and eight points that need to be filled. Who fills that spot will depend on how coach Richard Pitino wants to run the Motion Set offense.
Western Kentucky transfer Brandon Johnson will start at a forward position, with Carr in the backcourt along with Gabe Kalscheur. If transfer Liam Robbins from Drake is eligible, he will play center, leaving Tre’ Williams to be the first off the bench in his sophomore season. If Robbins is not granted eligibility the Golden Gophers starting five will have to play out of position and thus leave a starting spot for Williams.
At the very least Williams is looking at an extra ten minutes per game which will help his stats, plus after a season to get acclimatized to the NCAA game, his percentages that were low will be better, which will lead to a breakout this season.
