Big Ten Basketball: Breakout candidate from each team for 2020-21 season
Maryland: Donta Scott
The college basketball world may never find out the true story of Maryland Basketball, Mark Turgeon, and the mass exodus of five players. One thing we do know is that Donta Scott will remain at College Park and coach Turgeon will appreciate the loyalty.
During the 2019-20 season, Scott started 21 of the 31 games and played an average of just over 21 minutes. The fact that four forwards are transferring, their leading scorer Anthony Cowan was a senior, their second-leading scorer Jalen Smith has declared and is getting attention in some NBA mock drafts, it leaves Darryl Morsell and Aaron Wiggins as their top scorers and rebounders carrying over from 2019-20. They, however, are both guards.
Scott sat tenth when it came to finishing off plays with a 14 percent usage rate, compared to Morsell’s 19 percent of the plays, while he was on the court, ended with him taking a shot, going to the free-throw line or turning it over, yet averaged less than three points more than Scott. There is a reason that as a freshman Scott started and the others are now transferring. Look for his six-point average to come close to doubling in 2020-21.
