Each team in SEC Basketball has a member that will encompass what it is to be a breakout player in 2020-21. Here’s a look at the specific individuals to keep an eye on.

The detailed version of how the term ‘breakout’ is defined is found in my Big Ten breakout preview. A more condensed description of the type of players that will be recognized as ‘breakout’ are the ones that will be improving their stats, but in such a way that it contributes to the teams winning. A player that might improve his scoring average from two points per game to five points, is a great improvement but by no means a breakout. On the flip side, players who already are leading their team in scoring with 18 points a game have the aura around them that they already had their breakout season.

The goal here is to identify the players that are going to make an increased contribution and border on being selected to an All-SEC team. When previously the only thing they bordered was scoring double digits. A lot of good players who are going to see additional court time or become a larger part of the team’s offense are those who will ‘breakout’.

SEC Basketball had a competitive season with some spectacular individual performances. From the nine players selected to the All-SEC first team, only Keyontae Johnson has not declared for the NBA Draft.

Some will be drafted, some will go G-League and others yet will withdraw their name prior to the June 3rd deadline. Needless to say, at the time of this publication there are some unknowns for teams, coaches, and players. Regardless of who returns to their team, it will not have enough impact to prevent these players from breaking out this season.
