AAC Basketball: 2020-21 breakout candidates from each team
G Tremont Robinson-White, East Carolina
The East Carolina Pirates could be in line for their best season in recent memory in 2020-21. While that might not seem like the highest praise of all-time, the Pirates could be dangerous in the AAC and Tremont Robinson-White would be a reason why.
East Carolina is returning virtually their entire roster from a season ago when they 11-20 overall and 5-13 in AAC play. That type of continuity could be a key factor next season, especially at a time when there’s so much uncertainty about how the sport will progress.
Robinson-White almost started out of the gate during his first season with the Pirates, but a summer ankle injury did him in and forced him to miss the first few games of the season. The point guard wound up playing in 24 games, averaging 7.2 points and 2.3 assists per game.
Working on his three-point shot will be a big factor in Robinson-White’s development. He shot just 26.8 percent from beyond the arc in 2019-20. But at Northwest Mississippi Community College, he made 45.7 percent of his threes in 2017-18, so he’s clearly capable of shooting from the outside.
East Carolina’s last winning season came in 2012-13. If Robinson-White bounces back from his ankle injury and enjoys a full offseason of development, the drought could end next year.
