No. 1 NCAA Basketball prospect Jonathan Kuminga could be making big decisions soon. Which of the teams in the running are in the best position to land him?
In the past few days, there have been updated rankings in the 2020 NCAA Basketball recruiting class. There were a number of players who rose up the ladder, bolstering the respective team’s overall numbers. One player who didn’t rise was Jonathan Kuminga, who literally can’t go any higher.
There usually is some kind of debate as to who the No. 1 overall prospect is in a given recruiting class. In this current one, Cade Cunningham and Evan Mobley have been duking it out. But few have disagreed with Kuminga being at the top of the 2021 class, having unlimited potential and promise.
Originally from the Congo, Kuminga plays his basketball at the Patrick School in New Jersey. The 6’8 and 220 pound forward is an incredible athlete who already plays great defense, capable of blocking and stealing shots all over the court. He’s versatile and can play and guard both forward positions and even the center spot if needed. The No. 1 recruit’s offensive game is coming along nicely, extending his range and working on a post-game. There’s just not any weaknesses in his game, which is why there’s a possibility that he won’t even play in NCAA Basketball.
Since creating an initial top-10 list in November, there has been speculation that Kuminga could be reclassifying towards playing next season. There also has been talk about him bypassing college and playing for the NBA G League, a new initiative by the pro league that has already landed five-star prospects Jalen Green and Isaiah Todd. Kuminga has been contacted by the G League and that could be a legit possibility. He also could stick in the 2021 class as well, so his decision will be an ongoing storyline this offseason.
A lot has happened regarding both Kuminga and the teams in the running to land him. Which have emerged as the frontrunners and who has fallen off? Here’s a look at the top recruit’s potential fit with each team, looking at whether the 2020 or 2021 class would be better for him.
