ACC Basketball: Way-too-early power rankings for 2020-21 season
This is a team that will be incredibly difficult to judge for next season. They added more depth but not necessarily more talent based on who left and is coming in. The big losses is guard Derryck Thornton, big man Nik Popovic and forward Jairus Hamilton, who transferred out to Maryland. Backup guard Julian Rishwain also transferred out this offseason, going to San Francisco out west.
Replacing them are a trio of mid-major transfers who produced at their previous schools:
PG Rich Kelly: 16.7 ppg and 4.5 apg at Quinnipiac
F Fredrick Scott: 12.6 ppg and 5.2 rpg at Rider
C James Karnik: 12.2 ppg and 7.2 rpg at Lehigh
Al three are grad transfers who will provide depth for the Eagles next season. But as we’ve seen many times, mid-major players who come to the ACC don’t put up great numbers. Examples from last season include Lamarr Kimble (Louisville), Christian Keeling, and Justin Pierce (UNC). The better bet for Boston College is the healthy return of Wynston Tabbs, who averaged 13.9 ppg as a freshman but missed all of this past season with an injury. He and Providence sit-out transfer Makai Ashton-Langford will be joining the rotation as well.
With returning leading scorer Jay Heath and rising senior forward Steffon Mitchell also around, this will be a competitive team in the ACC next season. But I don’t know if the depth they may have will overcome the lack of All-Conference caliber talent to win games in the league. They’ll need one of these grad transfers to break out to truly make me and others a believer.
