NCAA Basketball: 10 teams who should target Indiana transfer Justin Smith
Oklahoma Sooners
Losing leading scorer Christian James leaves a hole for OU at the power forward spot. Brady Manek and Austin Reaves will provide the scoring in the frontcourt but Smith is someone who can be an asset defensively and on the boards, while still being a double-digit provider. Having lost Jamal Bieniemy to the transfer portal, the Sooners can afford to find someone to add some depth and keep them in contention for next season.
It would be a nice boost of either of the transfers Oklahoma already picked up (Umoja Gibson and Elijah Harkless) were eligible for 2020-21 but they’ll likely have to sit out. Smith can provide depth and experience to create an all-senior frontcourt lineup.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
With No. 1 overall recruit Cade Cunningham joining the Cowboys, there’s pressure for the team to maximize his one-year stay. They landed Cal Baptist grad transfer Ferron Flavors for shooting purposes and already have another guard and ball-handler Isaac Likekele to improve the perimeter.
The frontcourt has more issues, with 6’10 big man Yor Anei as the lone proven player in the rotation. There are three-star commits Montreal Pena and Matthew Alexander-Moncrieffe to provide depth but Smith could play at the power forward spot and provide some needed experience on the roster.
