Daivien Williamson is one of the top remaining transfers in the NCAA Basketball portal. Which teams are still in the running to land the guard?

When Wake Forest decided to make a head coaching change this late in the offseason, an NCAA Basketball domino effect occurred. Once the Demon Deacons hired Steve Forbes from East Tennessee State, a couple of key players elected to transfer out. One of them is Bo Hodges, who just went to the Butler Bulldogs. The other is Daivien Williamson, a 6’1 guard whose process is still ongoing.

Losing Williamson is going to be a real tough blow for ETSU, as he was the lone underclassmen in the rotation for the 30-win and SoCon title-winning squad. As a sophomore, he averaged 10.4 ppg and 2.6 apg in 28 mpg while starting 14 games. Williamson started in the team’s final 12 games and was one of the lead ball-handlers, including a career-high 10 assists in a win over Chattanooga.

Despite the gluttony of upperclassmen guards already on the roster, Williamson found himself as a key clog in the offense. He could possibly rejoin the Bucs and be a focal point as a junior and not have to sit out a season. Or he could join one of five potential options and sit out a season unless the guard gets a waiver. The following is a closer look at his potential fit will each potential future program.

BYU Cougars

The Cougars are looking for another guard to play immediately for next season alongside senior Alex Barcello but they could also use one for the year after once he graduates. That’s because outside of the injured Jesse Wade, there isn’t another capable ball-handler on the roster. They’re currently in the running for Georgetown transfer Mac McClung, who would probably drive Williamson elsewhere if he picks the Cougars.

BYU does have a few guards coming in future years in Dallin Hall, Richie Sounders, Trey Stewart and Tanner Toolson. But with all of them taking two-year missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints, the Cougars could use a veteran guard to hold their place while they’re gone. Williamson is capable of playing both guard spots and the SoCon is similar to the WCC in terms of the talent competition, making this a good possible landing spot.
