NCAA Basketball: Analyzing final 5 teams for transfer Daivien Williamson
Georgetown Hoyas
It’s great to hear that head coach Patrick Ewing is out of the hospital and recovering thanks to his fight with Covid-19. His coaching staff will have to help out in making the case for Williamson to join Hodges to the Big East, after an exodus of talent from the roster. He’d be playing for a team who’ll lose their returning starters, Jahvon Blair and JaMorko Pickett after next season, leaving so many question marks going forward.
What wouldn’t be a question for Williamson is the high amount of playing time he’d get with the Hoyas, likely as the lead guard. The Hoyas have a host of three-star commits who they hope will have big roles as freshmen but Williamson would have the edge over all of them unless they break out. Playing for a nationally-known program in the Big East is a big selling point, as long as there isn’t another coaching change he’ll have to deal within the next 12 months.
San Diego State Aztecs
Despite losing Mountain West Player of Year Malachi Flynn to the NBA Draft, the Aztecs are in good shape for next season, bringing in grad transfers Joshua Tomaić and Terell Gomez. With key pieces Matt Mitchell and Jordan Schakel also leaving after a year, there’s a huge need to find a quality guard that can both score and handle the ball for 2021-22.
It would be an easy transition for Williamson, as San Deigo State and ETSU have similar styles, focusing on defense first while being efficient on the offensive end. With Lamont Butler, Jr. as the only class of 2020 point guard in the group, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a veteran there to help replace Gomez. The Aztecs may be out west but it’s a great potential fit for this transfer.
