NCAA Basketball: 10 teams who should target transfer Andrew Nembhard
UCLA Bruins
The Bruins were supposed to have incoming five-star guard Dashien Nix for next season but he made the decision to leave for the NBA G League. They did get good news with Kentucky transfer Johnny Juzang officially eligible for next season. Now, head coach Mick Cronin has work to do for the year after, since they return most of the roster from the 19-win team.
For now, the only true ball-handler on the roster right now is Tyger Campbell, who had a productive freshmen campaign to produce 8.3 ppg and 5.0 apg. The question going forward will be whether or not the Bruins can win at a high-level with him. Coach Cronin may make an effort to land Nembhard to at the very least have another point guard on the roster and even be an upgrade after a sit-out season. The only concern is that Cronin’s system is similar to the one he just left offensively.
Villanova Wildcats
The Wildcats have no roster questions for next season since everyone is returning from a 24-win team. They will have to deal with a number of future roster departures, including starting point guard and All-Big East playmaker Collin Gillespie. Bryan Antoine is capable of being a distributor but there’s a good chance that Coach Jay Wright will look for a proven option to replace Gillespie.
Nembhard would be a great fit in the Wildcats system, that has a pair of national championships in recent years. If he has to sit out a year, there are few programs a player would rather spend it than at Villanova, projected preseason top-5 squad for 2020-21. The Gator guard could slide right in and be a featured piece and be in a great position for success.
There will be a number of programs besides these teams that’ll be in the running to land Andrew Nembhard. Could there be a better fit? Sure. It’ll be fascinating to see where he ends up, along with the possibility that he could fight for a waiver, which would upend the entire list of potential programs in play.
