Ivy League Basketball: Top 10 head coaches of the century (2000-20)
By Joey Loose
6. Mitch Henderson – Princeton (2011-2020)
Building off Johnson’s success, Henderson was hired at Princeton in 2011 and has done what’s he needed to do. He’s a fellow Princeton basketball player under Carril and had spent over a decade gaining experience as an assistant at Northwestern. His hiring was not a surprise considering his background, but there was no guarantee he could build off that recent success.
During his nine seasons back at Princeton, Henderson and the Tigers have finished in the top 3 in conference play in all but one season. They made the NCAA Tournament in 2017 after a perfect run through conference play and have established themselves among the Ivy League’s top teams yet again. In all, Princeton has made four postseason appearances and won 61% of their games since Henderson was hired.
It’s easy to laud Henderson for winning at a solid program like Princeton, though making just one NCAA Tournament to this point could be seen by some as a disappointment. However, there’s a number of teams in the Ivy League who aren’t close to competing for conference titles on a regular basis. Henderson continues to put together contending teams and should continue to do so in the immediate future.
