2. Andrew Nembhard could be the next elite transfer for Gonzaga Basketball

As a “mid-major”, Gonzaga Basketball has had to find alternative ways to create a powerhouse program. The international recruiting route has been one way while adding transfers has been the most notable for observers. Those who have “sat out” have been an impressive part of the coaching staff, led by Strength and Conditioning assistant coach Travis Knight.

It started with Kelly Olynyk nearly a decade ago. After two seasons as a mere bench player, he elected to sit out himself and take a redshirt. He improved his hame and came back to become both a WCC Player of the Year winner and an All-American. This became the first of a run of future redshirt stars, including Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer, Washington guard Nigel Williams-Goss, Missouri’s Jonathan Williams and Brandon Clarke of San Jose State. Most of these guys became All-Americans, won at a high level and are currently having great pro careers.

Duke just doesn’t have a resume that can compare to the Bulldogs when it comes to transfers. It also would be a risk for Nembhard to join a team whose roster is going to completely turn over, adding a brand new group of five-star freshmen. Although they’ll be talented, the fit may not work out in a similar way that happened in Florida. Especially if there’s another ball-handler he’ll have to contend with.
