Arizona State Basketball: Analyzing 2020 recruiting class for Sun Devils
Arizona State Basketball newcomer – Joshua Christopher: 6’5 / 215
The shooting guard from Mayfair High School brings some outstanding stats with him. As a high school senior the five-star prospect averaged 29.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.5 steals over 29 games played. Destined to be one of two Sun Devils on the PAC-12 All-Freshman Team, Christopher will cause Coach Hurley to do some maneuvering of starters.
Despite starting just nine games for the Sun Devils during 2019-20, Alonzo Verge Jr (14.6 ppg) was the second-leading scorer while averaging the fourth-most minutes. Verge Jr tallied a lot of his production as the off-guard while starting point guard Remy Martin averaged almost 34 minutes per game. With Martin forgoing his final year, regardless if he is selected in the NBA Draft or not, Verge Jr can step in as the starting point guard.
Christopher does not have the range that Verge Jr has, but on the sets when the two ‘bigs’ stagger screen for the off guard in the slot, Christopher has the ball-handling ability to get to the elbow for the jumper. Martin averaged just over six three-point attempts as the point guard, something Verge Jr will continue to do.
Barring injury, selection to the PAC-12 All-Freshman team seems like a guarantee. If Arizona State is going to compete, it is must that Christopher averages above 30 minutes, so he can reach his statistical floor of 14 points and three assists.
