NCAA Basketball: Teams impacted most by unique 2020 offseason
3. Teams who had an advantage compared to others this offseason – Virginia
Any team trying to find itself in an offseason of uncertainty should first look at its point guard play. That is one thing that Virginia does not have to worry about in the form of Kihei Clark (10.8 Pts, 4.2 Reb, 5.9 Ast). Clark leads the Cavaliers into an offseason where he is sure to be an All ACC point guard, but he is going to need some help, and help has arrived in sit one play one transfer Sam Hauser.
Many teams relying on a big-time transfer are in trouble because most of these kids are coming in and looking for a year of immediate eligibility. Hauser, however, got to sit and learn Tony Bennett’s system coming off of a National Title and people in Charlottesville should be ecstatic about how that has prepared him for a potential ACC player of the year run in 2020-21. Hauser was a 13 ppg and 6 rpg guy at Marquette in 2018-19.
On top of Hauser, there is another top 100 recruit waiting in the wings in redshirt freshman Kadin Shedrick. The 6’11 prospect watched Mamadi Diakite (presumed first-round draft pick) last year have one of the best seasons of any forward in the ACC and is going to be ready to step into Bennett’s scheme and make an impact.
Virginia is ready to handle a summer like this one because of Coach Tony Bennett’s style of play and ability to fit the right guys into it. He’s also got some studs returning. They may be a Final Four team waiting to happen.
