Rhode Island Basketball newcomer – Makhi and Makhel Mitchell

Forward | 6-foot-10 | 235 lbs. | University of Maryland, Washington, DC

Freshman Maryland Forwards Makhi and Makhel Mitchell have committed to play for Rhode Island Rams. The 6-foot-10 forwards released a joint statement in December announcing that they have entered themselves into the NCAA transfer portal. The Mitchell brothers picked the University of Rhode Island over Providence, Georgetown, Seton Hall, and Texas A&M.

Makhi Mitchell played 12 games where he averaged 9.2 minutes, 3.0 points, and 3.3 rebounds. Mitchell started in five of the twelve games he played.

Makhel Mitchell played 10 games where he averaged 6.7 minutes, 1.0 points, and 2.3 rebounds. All ten of the games he played in, he was a reserve.

The Mitchell brothers were convinced to join the program after speaking with Coach Cox and being able to relate for the future of this program. When asked both players mentioned they are motivated with the intention to bring an A10 championship back to Rhode Island, be nationally ranked, and make it to the NCAA tournament.

The two big men should have a large impact on the Rams if they are eligible for any part of this upcoming season. They each have three years of eligibility. With the departure of Cyril Langevine, adding two bigs will really help Coach Cox and the Rams depth.
