NCAA Basketball: Analyzing top-100 PG Tyrese Hunter top 10 programs
Iowa State Cyclones
With star point guard Tyrese Haliburton off to the NBA, the point guard duties for next season will be split between Rasir Bolton and grad transfer pickup Jalen Coleman-Lands. Neither are true point guards but incoming three-star ball-handler Jaden Walker may not be ready for big minutes as a freshman.
Add Memphis sit-out transfer Tyler Harris and returning sophomore guard Tre Jackson, you could have a ton of guards on the 2021-22 roster. However, Hunter may be the best actual facilitator of the bunch, since many of them may be better playing off the ball. That creates an interesting opportunity for Hunter to play out the way, or simply wait a year for Bolton to graduate and be a breakout candidate as a sophomore contributor.
Marquette Golden Eagles
Considered to be the “hometown” option of the group, the Golden Eagles automatically has an advantage in Hunter’s recruitment. They also have the recent history and success of All-American Markus Howard as a major selling point. It worked for Ohio State transfer point guard DJ Carton, who is set to play next season after receiving a waiver from the NCAA.
Regarding Carton, any scenario would work when it comes to Hunter’s recruitment. If Carton decides to play for just one season and moves on, the starting point guard is Hunter’s taking if he wants it. And if the former Buckeye comes back, Marquette will still need another ball-handler guard to replace the outgoing Koby McEwen anyways. With Gardner-Webb Jose Perez and a talented incoming group of forwards to play with, this has to be a landing spot Hunter strongly considers.
