NCAA Basketball: Analyzing top-100 PG Tyrese Hunter top 10 programs
Miami Hurricanes
Point guard Chris Lykes has carried the program for the last couple of years. But the Hurricanes are going to have to find a replacement after his upcoming senior campaign. Not only he but also wing Kameron McGusty, the team’s only other returning double-digit scorer. Hunter could reasonably play a big role as a freshman, although the development of rising sophomore guards Harlond Beverly and Isaiah Wong will determine how much he’s needed in year 1.
With incoming top-50 wing Earl Timberlake, Jr., and Stony Brook sit-out transfer, Elijah Olaniyi also likely around for the 2021-22 season, there’s some real promise for Miami even without either Lykes and McGusty around. But again, how Wong and Beverly play will determine whether or not there’s a need for an additional ball-handler.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
With the exception of maybe Gonzaga, no program has more positive momentum on the recruiting trail than the Red Raiders, including via the transfer portal. They landed three impact veterans, including guards Jamarius Burton and Mac McClung. The Georgetown transfer guard is looking for a waiver and only wants to play for a season, which would help clear the logjam in the backcourt for 2020-21.
But with Burton, Kyler Edwards, and potentially Nimari Burnett around for the year after, it may take a while for Hunter to get a meaningful role. And while players have developed and excelled under Coach Chris Beard, there have been others who couldn’t get minutes and transfer out. Not saying that would happen to Hunter but it’s a risk for sure nowadays with Texas Tech. But with his talents, it could be one worth taking.
