NCAA Basketball: Analyzing top-100 PG Tyrese Hunter top 10 programs
UConn Huskies
With Christian Vital and Alterique Gilbert both gone, Howard transfer guard RJ Cole will have a ton of pressure as the new starting point guard. Sophomore Jalen Gaffney will also have a much bigger role for the upcoming campaign, with James Bouknight playing again at the shooting guard spot.
With JUCO guard El Ellis now out of the picture, UConn still needs to add another point guard in the 2021 class, especially in the case both Cole and Gaffney struggle this upcoming season. Now back in the Big East, UConn can get an advantage back in the recruiting world. But if Cole/Gaffney does play well, then Hunter would have to wait a year for meaningful minutes.
Virginia Tech Hokies
With both returning leading passer Wabissa Bede and grad transfer pickup Cartier Diarra only around for one season, the Hokies are in massive need for a talented point guard in the 2021 class. There are other options, including Carter Whitt and Rahsool Diggins but Hunter is someone Virginia Tech should make a major run after.
This team is filled with talented perimeter guards, including Jalen Cone, Hunter Cattoor, and Nahiem Alleyne, as well as the very unique Tyrece Radford. But none of them are proven ball-handlers so having Hunter on the roster gives Coach Mike Young a true point guard to trust.
This is the early stage of Tyrese Hunter’s recruitment and any of these teams can make a real play at landing him. It’ll be a while before a commitment, which other decisions and recruiting news potentially affecting this situation. Stay tuned for a future update in Hunter’s process.
