Which teams are currently being overhyped for the upcoming 2020-21 NCAA Basketball season?

While we anxiously await or even wonder if the 2020-21 NCAA Basketball season is going to happen there are programs preparing but also journalists all over the country prognosticating just how good their local school will be. Some are ranking top 25s, some grading recruiting classes and some are doing conference previews. I am taking it all in.

Every season there are teams whose preseason expectations are a slam dunk top 10 team but do not live up to the hype. Case in point, last year’s Florida Gators. While they ended up righting the ship and had positioned themselves for a tournament birth, the addition of the top transfer in the country in Kerry Blackshear Jr, was the missing piece that the Gators needed and there was no way they weren’t going to be a title contender, so we thought. The pieces didn’t fit as well as people imagined and Florida, who started the season in everyone’s top 10 was out of the top 25 by December.

In 2019-20 North Carolina lost almost its whole starting five from a season ago, but they landed a transcendent freshman in Cole Anthony who many said would have them competing for an ACC title. They put all their eggs in Anthony’s basket and his injury early on derailed the Tar Heels season and they finished 14-19. Relying on blockbuster recruits is not a sure thing.

For fans of the teams that are listed below, most will be pretty good, and this is not meant to say these squads don’t have a shot at a deep run in March. But I have identified some teams that appear to be overvalued and/or have some serious shortcomings that will need to be addressed if they have designs of winning conference titles or getting out of the First weekend in the NCAA Tournament. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the most over-hyped team from each of the big 6 conferences.
