Atlantic Sun Basketball: Top 10 head coaches of the century (2000-20)
By Joey Loose
2. Andy Enfield – Florida Gulf Coast (2011-2013)
As previously mentioned, Enfield led Florida Gulf Coast to some pretty phenomenal success. Despite spending just two seasons in the Atlantic Sun, he certainly deserves such a high spot on this list for that success. Enfield was a former NBA shooting coach who also spent five seasons at Florida State as an assistant. When the Eagles came calling in 2011, he began his head coaching career, though few realized what he’d mean to this program.
His first season was unimpressive, finishing up at 15-17 and a sixth-place finish, but things really came together in 2013. His Eagles finished in second place and won the Atlantic Sun Tournament, securing a 15-seed in their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. They then knocked out Georgetown and San Diego State, becoming the first 15-seed to ever make the NCAA Tournament, amassing 26 total wins in a shocking season.
Enfield quickly departed for USC, quite a meteoric rise after that Sweet Sixteen run. He’s spent seven years with the Trojans, led them to a pair of NCAA Tournaments, and has quite an impressive slate of recruits coming to southern California this upcoming year. The highlight of his career might always be that run with the Eagles that really established this program in people’s minds.
