Atlantic Sun Basketball: Top 10 head coaches of the century (2000-20)
By Joey Loose
9. Casey Alexander – Stetson (2011-2013), Lipscomb (2013-2019)
Before taking over at Stetson in 2011, Alexander knew only one basketball home. He had played for Rick Byrd at Belmont in the early 1990s and spent the last 16 years on his coaching staff. He was certainly ready to take over a program of his own, but Stetson was a program with a difficult and unimpressive history. The same could easily be said about the Lipscomb program he took over just a few years later.
Alexander led Stetson to a third-place finish in 2013 before departing for Lipscomb, having done decent work in those two years with the Hatters. He did much better work for six years with the Bisons, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2018. In his final three seasons, Alexander finished 72-31 and nearly won the NIT title in 2019.
When his mentor retired, Alexander accepted the Belmont job to succeed him in 2019, the perfect marriage of coach and program. However, he left quite a legacy behind with the Bisons, leading the program to their first NCAA Tournament and setting them up for future success. Lipscomb became one of the premier Atlantic Sun programs under Alexander’s watch; we’ll see if they continue to build as a program without him.
