Big South Basketball: Top 10 head coaches of the century (2000-20)
By Joey Loose
4. Nick McDevitt – UNC Asheville (2013-2018)
It would come as no surprise to McDevitt or anyone that knew him that he’d become head coach at UNC Asheville and be successful, seeing as how his entire basketball career had been with the Bulldogs. He played his college ball for the program and spent twelve years on the staff before being promoted to head coach, helping build their success in the early part of the century as well.
McDevitt did some pretty good work in his five seasons running the show, winning 98 total games and nearly 70% of Big South games. He led Asheville back to the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and followed that up with a pair of regular-season titles. The Bulldogs won 66 total games in his final three seasons and were clearly establishing themselves as the team to beat in the conference.
After two decades, McDevitt finally moved on from Asheville, taking the Middle Tennessee job in 2018. Life with the Blue Raiders has been rough and slow, but his success with the Bulldogs still remains. He’s responsible for a whole host of success that the program has seen since the turn of the century, and his work as head coach certainly justifies his position on the list.
