NCAA Basketball: Top 25 breakout junior players for 2020-21 season
20. DJ Harvey – Vanderbilt Commodores
2018-19 stats: 10.7 ppg and 4.2 rpg at Notre Dame
The 6’6 wing had plenty of ups and downs with the Fighting Irish and ultimately ended up transferring and sitting out at Vanderbilt. He shot under 40% from the field overall and below 30% from three-point range despite being a high-volume shooter.
But Vanderbilt will need him to be a high-volume producer in order to replace both Aaron Nesmith and Saban Lee, who each have elected to enter and stay in the NBA Draft. Will Harvey average 23 ppg like Nesmith did? Probably not. But he will have a major opportunity for success and with better shooting can become a leading scorer for the rebuilding Commodores.
19. Feron Hunt – SMU Mustangs
2019-20 stats: 11.0 ppg and 6.7 rpg
Had this article come out a week prior, Hunt wouldn’t have made it on the list. But with the news that the team’s other starting forward Isiaha Mike is officially going pro and leaving the team, Hunt will now have a major opportunity to be an even bigger focal point of the offense. Oklahoma State transfer Yor Anei has yet to receive a waiver and even still, he’s more of a defender than Mike was for SMU.
Hunt was great in the non-conference last season, including several double-double performances. But outside of the 23-point effort against UConn, AAC play was rough for the forward which ultimately caused him to be benched. With a year of experience and both Tyson Jolly and Kendric Davis coming back, look for Hunt’s own numbers to climb as well.
