NCAA Basketball: Updated 2020-21 power rankings after NBA Draft deadline
With James Wiseman long gone from the team, the lone NBA Draft decision that the Tigers were looking already came with AAC Player of the Year Precious Achiuwa electing to move on. But the rest of the team was set on coming back, including DJ Jefferies, Alex Lomax, Boogie Ellis, and Lester Quinones. However, this core group alone isn’t good enough to get ranked.
However, Memphis and head coach Penny Hardaway has been busy this offseason, landing several marquee players. One of them is Moussa Cisse, a five-star center prospect who reclassified to play this upcoming season. Once considered the favorite to go to LSU, the Tigers were able to find their replacement for Achiuwa.
The team also landed a pair of high-scoring transfers in guard Landers Nolley and forward Deandre Williams. Each of them scored over 15 ppg at their respective former stops and with a waiver from the NCAA, could very well lead Memphis in scoring next season.
This ranking is a bit of a hedged bet. If both Nolley and Williams each get a waiver from the NCAA (who so far has given everyone who applied one), then the Tigers could easily be a top-10 preseason team. If only one gets approved then top-20 is warranted. Neither would equal being left out of the top-25 entirely. While the NBA Draft has come and gone, there’s still a ton left for Memphis to deal with this offseason.
