SWAC Basketball: Former Nebraska star Cam Mack commits to Prairie View
By Bryan Mauro
What is next for Prairie View Basketball?
The Panthers already had a good roster returning and were expected by those who cover the conference to finish near the top of the league. Texas Southern and Alabama State are also teams that are expected to finish near the top of the league standings as well.
Mack currently must sit out a season unless he is granted a waiver. The waiver process is one that is never a cut and dry case, but Mack is one of the players who should be expected to get a waiver.
The Panthers are assuredly going to apply for a waiver, and I suspect that Nebraska is going to want to wash their hands of the situation as quickly as possible, especially since he may have been asked to transfer as was suggested earlier. If Nebraska signs off on the waiver the NCAA should have no choice to grant the waiver as the previous team saw no problem with the transfer destination. If Nebraska decides not to grant the waiver then it is up to the NCAA to decide if Mack has a case for a waiver.
That is where the gray area exists. The guard is transferring down to a school that is not in a power conference and a school that is close to home. Those are things that the NCAA looks at when granting waivers.
It is never a foregone conclusion that the NCAA will make the right decision regarding eligibility. What is the truth is when Mack is eligible he is going to be the best player in the league and the overwhelming favorite for the SWAC player of the year.
