He’s a hot name in the coaching world, but why should Villanova Basketball Jay Wright say no if the Sixers offered him their head coaching job?

For nearly a decade, the Philadelphia 76ers franchise has been rebuilding, repurposing the franchise for a brighter tomorrow. Trusting the process had led to the acquisition of star players like Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. However, it’s quite difficult to be patient with a long rebuilding process, especially when the fruits of that labor aren’t on full display.

The Sixers are not yet ready for the biggest stage, having been swept out of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics in the first round. There’s no question that the Celtics are among the best teams in the NBA, but the result is still beyond disappointing for the fans in Philadelphia.

Head coach Brett Brown has overseen the rebuild since his hiring in 2013, but now might be the time to make a change as the program looks forward. There will be a number of names brought up for the job, but one local hero looms larger than the rest.

It’s hard to underestimate what Jay Wright has meant to Villanova since taking over as head coach of the Wildcats nearly two decades ago. He led Villanova to national championships in 2016 and 2018 and is responsible for what is clearly the program’s most successful era. He lives and works just a few miles from the Sixers and there have already been rumors about a possible marriage between the two parties.

If Brown were to be fired and Wright was hired in his place, then the Sixers would be getting an incredible head coach just as their rebuild is likely coming to an end. However, there’s no guarantee that Wright would take the NBA coaching position. We’re going to take a look at a few reasons why taking the Sixers job would be a mistake for Wright and why he is better off staying at Villanova.
