Top-60 wing Brandon Weston made the decision to commit to Seton Hall Basketball for the 2021 class. It’s another sign of the growth of the Pirates program.

Although Seton Hall Basketball didn’t get the chance to make one last postseason run with star guard Myles Powell, the great past season the program had still had its benefits for the program. That was made evident with the official announcement of class of 2021 recruit Brandon Weston joining.

The 6’5 small forward was the star of Morgan Park High School last season, averaging around 24 points and 10 rebounds. Weston is a strong athlete and offensive playmaker, capable of playing at both the wing and shooting guard positions. His stock has continually risen to a consensus top-75 overall in the 2021 recruiting class, making him the highest-rated commit for the program since 2014, when they landed both Angel Delgado and Isaiah Whitehead.

While all of the attention has been on Villanova and its rise as a national powerhouse, Seton Hall has quietly become a mainstay participant in the NCAA Tournament. Had the event continued in March, it would’ve been five straight years for the program, the longest in program history.

They’ve become a true threat in the Big East and have benefitted very well from the conference realignment. Add to it the recent struggles of both Syracuse and St. John’s in the state of New York, and you have a genuine recruiting pipeline to work with.

Weston will be needed to have an instant impact as a freshman in 2021-22. The Pirates have Harvard grad transfer point guard Bryce Aiken and returning senior big man Sandro Mamukelashvili to provide the offense for the upcoming season. But barring a breakout contributor emerging alongside those two, there will be sincere questions as to where the scoring production comes from.

As a team that usually relies on experience and defense, Weston and fellow four-star commit Ryan Conway may be the key pieces for the Pirates over a year from now. And don’t discount the other current commit in 6’5 small forward Tyler Powell, who is close to being ranked as a four-star commit as well.

Currently, with a top-10 overall recruiting class for 2021, Seton Hall Basketball still has a couple of more spots to fill if they want, or leave one open for a grad/eligible transfer next offseason. But for those generally surprised at the recruiting success for the program, it was only a matter of time before the on-the-court success translated to off-the-court results.

Brandon Weston won’t be the only top-75 recruit the Pirates land in the distant future, something that should make their Big East peers all the more nervous.
