Expectations for Derrick Alston Jr. in 2020-21

Every year teams must replace a group of quality players who helped them win a lot of games and help level the playing field within a conference. This year Boise State is going to have to do just that as they lost two great players with Justinian Jessup and RJ Williams those two players were responsible for a lot of production and a lot of wins for Coach Rice. Even without those players, the Broncos have really high expectations and it speaks to the ability of this coaching staff to effectively build a roster to avoid the rebuild every season.

This year the Broncos have the best player in the league with Alston Jr. The guard earned second-team all-conference honors a season ago and this year it would be a huge surprise if he does not earn the conference player of the year. Don’t be surprised if the senior averages upwards of 20 points per game and leads the team in points, assists, and rebounds for the second year in a row.

He does everything for this team, and the NBA is going to take notice of that. Once he earns the conference player of the year the lanky, athletic guard will end up in the NBA either through the G league or through the draft. Alston has a game that will enable him to play in the NBA for a long time and be successful.

Outside of Alston, the Broncos have a loaded roster this year built mostly by transfers. Abu Kigab enters his second season in the Boise program. Kigab had a great first year in blue and orange and showed that he can be relied upon to score points and be a key piece of the offense.

This year Kigab is not the only profile transfer for Boise State. Devonaire Doutrive, Mladan Armus and Emmanuel Akot are the high-profile transfers who make the Bronco roster intriguing this year. These players are all expected to step in and provide quality minutes and scoring for the team.

The outlook for the Broncos is great, and they are going to compete near the top of the league. Hopefully this year the Broncos will be able to turn their expected success this season into an NCAA tournament appearance.
