9. Charles Smith (1986-89)

Career stats: 11.1 ppg and 2.4 apg

After two seasons as primarily a backup, Smith emerged as a national star as an upperclassman. As a junior, the 6’1 guard averaged 15.7 ppg to lead the team, despite coming off the bench half the time. On of team that lacked offense overall, Smith became the player Coach Thompson could rely on, particularly in the clutch.

Several 20-point efforts in the Big East allowed the Hoyas to make the NCAA Tournament as an 8 seed, beating the LSU Tigers, with Smith scoring 10 points in the game. The guard came back as a senior even better, averaging a career-high 18.7 ppg and 5.1 apg. Considering that the 1989 Hoyas squad featured three other players who made the list, that spoke to how good Smith was during his senior campaign.

The Big East agreed, awarding the guard with Conference Player of the Year. He dropped a career-high 35 points against Providence and dominated in the conference tournament. Smith led the Hoyas to a 29-5 season overall, ranked as high as No. 2 in the polls and a trip to the Elite 8 before falling to the Duke Blue Devils. Smith had 21 in the loss to Duke but did drop 34 against Notre Dame just a few days earlier.

Smith had one of the top individual seasons in Georgetown history and accomplished plenty, including leading another crop of stars to continue their dominance in the Big East.
