NCAA Basketball: Analyzing teams in play for top-100 forward Ben Gregg
Teams with no shot to land Ben Gregg
Portland Pilots
There’s a better chance for Gregg to end up in the G League next year than the Pilots, who have won a grand total of seven conference games in four years. The worst team in the WCC, Portland has little to offer to the prospect, other than being close to home. And considering that there are two power conference options also in the state of Oregon, that isn’t even a real reason for them to have hope.
Eastern Washington Eagles
With him and his parents originally coming from eastern Washington state (remember that), Gregg had the Eagles on the list isn’t a big surprise. And unlike Portland, Eastern Washington has been a very good mid-major program, having won the Big Sky regular-season title last season. And having one of the faster-paced offenses is a real selling point. Unfortunately, I would bet a ton of money that a top-100 prospect isn’t going to the Big Sky, no matter how good the team is.
Utah Utes
A Pac-12 program a bit off the coast, the Utes isn’t close to home for Gregg compared to others on the list, giving them a real disadvantage. The other problem is that the program has been going through some roster turnover via transfers, which also is concerning for any potential recruit. Among the seven Pac-12 teams after Gregg, this is the one I feel has the least likely chance to get the commitment.
Virginia Tech Hokies
On one hand, the Hokies have plenty of available playing time to offer in the frontcourt, having just mid-major transfers Justyn Mutts and Keve Aluma as likely starters. Gregg could easily start for them as a freshman. But while there are other teams on this list I could see his traveling out east for, the rebuilding Virginia Tech squad is not one of them.
