NCAA Basketball: Analyzing finalists for top-60 forward Trey Kaufman

Top-tier forward prospect in the 2021 recruiting class Trey Kaufman has five NCAA Basketball programs to choose from. Which of them is the best fit?

When it comes to prime examples of the modern-day power forwards in the game of basketball. Trey Kaufman has to be one of them. The consensus top-75 prospect in the 2021 NCAA Basketball recruiting class can play both inside and out, as well as make three-pointers at a high rate.

As a junior at Silver Creek High School, Kaufman averaged around 26 ppg and 10 rpg, making 64% of his total shots and making an impressive 40% from deep. He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Indiana last season, seeing his stock rise exponentially into the top-100 of every recruiting ranking available, going as high as No. 31 for 247sports.

After making a pair of unofficial visits in the past couple of weeks, Kaufman has decided to announce a list of five contenders for his services. They include the obvious candidates of Indiana and Purdue, along with Indiana State, North Carolina, and Virginia.

It’s an impressive list for the young man, who’ll have a big impact regardless of where he ends up. Here’s a closer look at how he would fit with each of the five options.

Indiana Hoosiers

Considered by recruiting experts to be the current favorite, the blue blood program from  Bloomington will always be a frontrunner for top-tier in-state players. Kaufman is familiar with both the current players and staff, as well as 2021 center commit Logan Duncomb, who played together on the AAU circuit for Indiana Elite.

Assuming that starter Trayce Jackson-Davis does depart for the NBA Draft after next season, Kaufman would have plenty of playing time available out the gate. And even though Indiana has taken a step back in the Big Ten pecking order in the past few years, the name still remains prestigious as ever. And considering that the three best players on the roster will be gone a year from, Kaufman not only would start, but also could be the focal point of their offense as well.
