SEC Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2020-21 season
2019-20 SEC Record: 10-8
If you look at Texas A&M’s 2019-20 roster, it probably won’t jump off the page, but it was clearly good enough to earn them a 10-8 conference record and give them a legitimate (but slim) shot to earn a double-bye in the SEC Tournament. Why? Because they committed to running their sets to perfection, disrupting their opponents on the defensive end, and getting the ball inside to their forceful big man in the post, Josh Nebo (who graduated in the spring).
And while the Aggies will be without Nebo this season, I believe that they have enough talent to avoid falling to the very bottom of the league. Nebo had a lot to do with Texas A&M’s upset road victory over Auburn late in the season, but guys like Jay Jay Chandler and Savion Flagg stepped up in a big way, adding 14 points apiece. The thing that should excite Texas A&M fans the most, is that last season, former Virginia Tech head coach, Buzz Williams was in his very first year.
Sometimes, coaches don’t always transition smoothly from one power 5 school to another, but Williams accepted the fact that there would be bumps in the road as the season progressed and clearly reassured his guys that they had no reason to feel sorry for themselves. If they focus on getting off to a stronger start in conference play, as opposed to trying to play catch up near the end, they are certainly capable of finishing even higher than 8th in the conference.
