The Miami Heat are set up to be one of the more impressive long-term contenders in the Eastern Conference. That makes the possibilities available with the No. 20 NBA Draft pick all the more interesting.

The Miami Heat have been a pleasant surprise this season. Not because the Heat was expected to be a bad team but because of the ease with which the Heat dispatched the 56-win Milwaukee Bucks and the reigning MVP. Injuries and long-term health concerns stopped Giannis Antetokounmpo from playing the whole series but even when he did play Miami’s attention to detail on defense had him performing at a subpar level.

Following their dismissal of the Bucks, Erik Spoelstra and Co. will turn their attention to a similarly well-coached, defensive-minded Boston Celtics. Whether or not the Heat is able to wear down and defeat the Celtics the same way they did Milwaukee, this has been a wildly successful season. The Heat are in a legitimate spot to come away with their 4th NBA Championship while also having a roster makeup that allows a ton of flexibility moving forward.

Because of how well Pat Riley, Erik Spoelstra, and the Miami Heat brain trust have the franchise set up (and honestly, always have) there is no incredibly urgent need for the team to invest heavily in a rookie. But that is precisely what makes their No. 20 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft so enticing.

The Miami Heat can walk away from the draft with an impact rookie because of the relative parity in the 2020 class, absolute luxury for a team that is one of the stronger title contenders in the NBA. If the Heat keep this pick expect them to add a prospect from a surprisingly deep point guard class to help prepare for the eventual departure of Goran Dragic.
