Villanova Basketball: 5 reasons why Wildcats should be 2020-21 title favorites
4. A high quality, but not too crowded bench
When considering a college basketball roster, many might think the more talent the better. However, there is something to be said about balance, and not having too many mouths to feed. With zero 2020 recruits and zero non-redshirt transfers on the roster, Villanova will likely be able to ride with an 8-10 player rotation without any major conflict or controversy.
Antoine and Tulane transfer Caleb Daniels seem poised to take on the majority of the guard minutes off the bench. Senior Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree and redshirt freshman Eric Dixon are likely to grab minutes in the frontcourt. Beyond that, there aren’t many spots to be filled in the Villanova lineup, but there aren’t too many players vying for those minutes either.
Consistency in a player’s role is an unsung key in individual and team success. While it might not seem like a major difference, coach Wright’s ability to key in on a successful nightly rotation will benefit both his players and his team throughout the season. By the time the national championship game rolls around, should the Wildcats get there, having players play the same role for the 30th or more time can only be a plus.
This theory is obviously withholding injury, but should the team stay healthy, this lack of variation in role will help Villanova throughout the season.
