With the NBA Draft inching closer, these five teams might want to keep an eye out for small forward or wing prospects above all else.

During the NBA’s long and esteemed history, the center position kicked things off as the most imperative role to fill for each team with Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain aboard, only for some guy on the Chicago Bulls to later come along and teach everyone that a guard can run the league as well.

But having now moved into an era featuring dominant players such as Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, and even LeBron James prior to his recent transition into a “point forward,” small forwards today appear as perhaps the players most vital to a team’s success.

Evidently now holding the title of basketball’s most influential spot, some incoming NBA players categorized as small forward or “wing” players highlight today’s mock drafts and future rookie power rankings as incredibly valuable assets likely to spur heavy interest.

Isaac Okoro, Devin Vassell, and Anthony Edwards all find themselves swirling around as possible lottery selections, while Aaron Nesmith, Saddiq Bey, and also RJ Hampton bring some excitement to the table as alternative first-round prospects.

But the talent at hand only covers half of the matter, as these players wielding it must ally themselves with a team primed and ready to welcome them in as well as develop them properly. Potentially drafted to a team already loaded with wing players, these incoming players might miss out on a chance to play significant minutes and reach their full potential during their rookie campaigns.

But luckily for these soon-to-be NBA greenhorns, the demand for effective wing players remains incredibly strong going into the 2020-21 season. After harboring glaring holes at or close to the small forward spot last year, these five NBA teams need to select a player of that sort the most during the 2020 NBA Draft.
